Day 2 Tusheti Crossing – Datvisjvari pass (2600m) – Shatili

Started the day be reconciling myself with putting on wet clothes and shoes. Rich breakfast including khachapuri and packing.

The first section of the road continued on nice tarmac for about 15-20km, then the tarmac finished and the gravel / dirt road started along with the climb to the pass. More dogs of course.

The weather was good, but the road was still wet in places from the rain overnight.

The climb was tough, could feel the elevation maybe. Some sections were definitely a hiking effort.

The highlight was half way up, meeting a shepherd. We talked a bit in broken Russian. Then he wanted to try the bike, and he gave me his horse. Eventually he managed to ride the bike for a bit and I walked his horse. He invited me for food and tea with his family. We had delicious sour wine and home made food. Then I continued making it up to the pass. Super friendly people!

At the pass didn’t stay long as it was getting late and I had at least a two hour descend to Shatili. As I started going down the weather changed and the rain came back. It slowly increased into a small rain storm. The roads got proper muddy, black mud, a mix from the local slate stone clippings and clay.

Made it to Shatili soaked. But realised that the guest house I booked was at the upper part so had to hike there. At that point I was freezing and wet, had a shower and went straight to bed. The house didn’t offer food so I ate whatever I had left on me.

Another day of incredible views and making it properly into the mountains now.

The surface was around 80% gravel / dirt road.
